Who is the All-Time best Driver? - Finals

Well, my man Earnhardt didn't make it to the finals, but it wasn't a complete shock. The final tally was Gordon 10 Earnhardt 9, and I was expecting the vote to be very close. Petty edged out Pearson 11-8, again not a shocker. Very close competition. So here we are at the finals. Who is the best driver of all time. Petty or Gordon.

#1 Richard Petty vs #2 Jeff Gordon

Here is a refresher for the stats used to decide the seeds

Petty - 7 Championships, 6 time runner up for the championship, and 200 wins

Gordon - 4 Championships, 2 time runner up for the championship, and 81 wins.

Using those stats alone, Petty should win, but of course there are other variables that should be taken into account.

Who is the all-time best driver - Round 5

OK, now here we are at the Final Four. Who will move on, who loses out. I didn't notice it when I set up the groups, but this round pits some old school drivers against each other, and two modern era drivers against each other, guaranteeing that the finals will have a driver from each era. If I was choosing, I think my final 4 would have wound up just like this. I know many people consider David Pearson the best of all time, can he beat The King. And of course from a fan perspective the Gordon/Earnhardt battle should be very interesting. I am a Earnhardt fan, and I am happy to see him still alive, can he make it onto the finals?

Old School

#1 Richard Petty vs. #1 David Pearson

Modern Era

#1 Dale Earnhardt vs. #2 Jeff Gordon

Who is the all-time best driver - Round 4

Time for round 4. This round should be difficult to predict winners in since all 4 groups have the 1 seed going against the 2 seed. I would have thought a 3 or 4 seed could have snuck through into this round, now the big question is, can any of teh 2 seeds upset the 1 seeds?

Group 1

#1 Richard Petty vs. #2 Cale Yarborough

Group 2

#1 David Pearson vs. #2 Bobby Allison

Group 3

#1 Darrell Waltrip vs. #2 Jeff Gordon

Group 4

#1 Dale Earnhardt vs. #2 Lee Petty

Feel free to check out the other rounds if you missed them. You can still post you choices if you like, although it won't change the results. It would be interesting to see how others view the matchups.

#7 Bobby Labonte 10 vs.#10 Neil Bonnett 7
#8 Speedy Thompson 9 vs.#9 Fonty Flock 8

Some people commented on the "easy" path Sr. has, I assure you this wasn't intentional. I calculated the point values for each driver and Sr. was 4th on the list making him a 1 seed. I then entered 1-4 next to each driver and did the same for the 2 seeds, 3 seeds, etc... In this fashion Lee Petty was in Group 4. In Hindsight I should have done it like a snaking draft, 1-4, then 4-1 for the 2 seeds, 1-4 for the 3 seeds, 4-1 for the 4 seeds. Alas, that thought didn't occur to me, so you are stuck with the current groupings. We have a couple of interesting matchups. Petty vs. the late Benny Parson, in group 2 you have Bobby vs. Davey Allison, Herb Thomas vs. Joe Weatherly in Group 2, and Lee Petty (one of NASCARS founding drivers) vs. Bobby Labonte who drives for Lee's son Richard.

#1 Richard Petty vs. #8 Benny Parsons
#2 Cale Yarborough vs. #7 Terry Labonte
#3 Rusty Wallace vs. #6 Fireball Roberts
#4 Junior Johnson vs. #5 Bobby Isaac

#1 David Pearson vs. #10 Matt Kenseth
#2 Bobby Allison vs. #9 Davey Allison
#3 Ned Jarrett vs. #6 Rex White
#4 Bill Elliott vs. #5 Mark Martin

#1 Darrell Waltrip vs. #9 Buddy Baker
#2 Jeff Gordon vs. #7 Ricky Rudd
#3 Herb Thomas vs. #6 Joe Weatherly
#4 Tim Flock vs. #5 Tony Stewart

#1 Dale Earnhardt vs. #8 Speedy Thompson
#2 Lee Petty vs. #7 Bobby Labonte
#3 Buck Baker vs. #6 Fred Lorenzen
#4 Jimmie Johnson vs. #5 Dale Jarrett

Who is the all-time best driver

Everyone has their favorite driver, and think that he is the best ever. Hard to argue against Richard Petty with 200 wins, but then again he raced 2-3 times a week. Dale Earnhardt deserves some consideration after winning 7 championships. What about David Pearson with 105 wins and 3 championships, or Darrel Waltrip. I know many fans nowadays will make the arguement for Jeff Gordon. This little contest won't really settle the debate but it should be interesting to see who the CBS Sportsline community thinks is the best of all times.

The really hard part was to come up with seedings that were fair. Do I base it solely on races won? What about winning a championship, shouldn't that be taken into consideration. How about if a guy was a runner up to the champion. He still had a great season but someone just beat him. I figured I would take all of that into consideration as well. I went to Jayski and pulled up the All-time win list. It got interesting down near the 64th spot. The drivers in places 61-64 all had 7 wins, and the 65th spot had 5, so it made the cutoff seem easy. Or so I though. As I looked a little further, I noticed Alan Kulwicki had only 5 wins but also had a championship. Do I leave him off the list? To decide that I added him, so I had 65 drivers vying for 64 spots. I gave each driver a point for winning a race. I also awarded 2 points for every championship won, and 1 point for each runner up spot. Of course this didn't make my decision for the 64th spot any easier since Alan now had 7 points and so did 4 other drivers. Well someone had to be left off but who? I decided to keep Alan because I think he would have won more races had he not died. The other drivers were Marshall Teague, A.J. Foyt, Darel Dieringer, and Jim Reed. I have heard of Marshall Teague and AJ Foyt, so I thought I would find out more about the other two. Darel Dieringer drove in 181 races and won 7 times, Jim Reed raced in 107 races and won 7 times. Since Reed had a better win percentage I included him, sorry to all of the Darel Dieringer fans.

So now it is up to you guys. Who is the best all-time? I will vote only in the event of a tie, polls close at 8ish Monday morning.
